Plastic IBC tanks require UN and DOT certifications to hold flammable items. During testing, the tank will be checked for durability and to ensure that it has the correct wall thickness. Other aspects, such as where the rigid HDPE IBC tank will be stored, will be examined as well. The tanks will also need to be checked every five years for safety measures.
A Dangerous Temperature for Rigid HDPE IBC Tanks
If the contents inside the rigid HDPE IBC tank reach higher than 130 degrees Celsius, it could cause the tank to melt or catch on fire. If the tank ends up igniting, it can be extinguished quickly with the help of a fire retardant. To help prevent the flames from spreading, it is often recommended that the tanks be stored in an area with fire alarms.
How to Store Flammable Materials in Rigid HDPE IBC Tanks
Flammable materials of up to one pint can be stored in rigid HDPE IBC tanks. The materials must meet qualifications for Category 1 liquids. Category 1 liquids have a flashpoint below 22,7 degrees Celsius and a boiling point of 35 degrees Celsius. If a liquid that does not meet these qualifications is stored inside the tanks, it could cause the container to catch on fire.
