What is the Hydrostatic Pressure Test?

IBC tanks undergo a series of tests gauging quality and sturdiness in order to be certified for shipping and reuse. One of the tests, the hydrostatic IBC test, ensures that tanks containing liquids or solids under pressure will not leak or explode, preventing damage to the people shipping them and the tanks around them.

How is the Hydrostatic Pressure Test Performed?

The Hydrostatic pressure test is administered by a trained individual either at a testing facility or on-site at the manufacturing facility. The necessary pressure is calculated and applied to the tank. Different designs of IBCs must be able to withstand different amounts of pressure determined by the materials and intended purpose of the IBC tank. A container passes the test if it does not leak or sustain any visible deformity which would minimize the effectiveness of the tank.

Which IBCs Need to Pass?

Despite the wide variety of potential tests, each IBC must only pass certain tests that relate directly to the use of the container. The hydrostatic pressure test is performed only on containers that are designed to be leak-proof, such as rigid IBCs and flexible IBCs which are loaded and discharged under pressure.
