What is a Leak Test on IBC Tanks?

A leak test on IBC tanks ensures that the containers do not have any punctures that could cause contents to spill out when they are placed inside. Leak tests are done by sealing off the IBC tank’s openings and then applying a layer of water and soap around its exterior.

Why It is Important to Do Leak Tests

Leak tests are vital as they ensure that the IBC works well. Leak tests can also be done on products that can be connected to the IBC tanks as a way to check that they also do not contain punctures.

When doing a leak test, the IBC tank needs to be put into a secluded area with a regenerative air blower. This will create pressure around the tank. If there is a leak in the tank, the pressure will cause the water and soap around it to burst out.

The Correct Pressure for Leak Tests

The correct pressure for leak tests depends on numerous aspects, but is generally 2.9 PSIG. This pressure should be applied to the tank for at least 10 minutes for proper results.

The Number of Leak Tests That Should Be Done for IBC Tanks

Leak tests should be done every 2.5 years to check the quality of the IBCs. For those who would like to perform leak tests on more than one IBC tank at a time, a leak test calculator can be used to ensure pressure calibrations and measurements for the group is correct.
