How Long Will a Rigid HDPE IBC Tank Last?
The life expectancy of any Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tank depends on the quality of care it receives as well as the products it carries. Rigid HDPEs may see over a decade of good quality use before needing to be partially or fully replaced. This number may decrease if the liquids shipped are corrosive.
What is a Rigid HDPE IBC Tank?
An HDPE tank is a typical rigid IBC (including a plastic bottle, cap and spout, and a metal cage) with an atypical bottle material. Using High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic allows the IBC to ship and store more specialized materials, such as certain types of foods and mildly corrosive liquids.
How to Properly Care for an HDPE IBC Tank
While the life expectancy of a standard HDPE IBC tote is around a decade, owners can follow certain steps to increase the lifespan of their tanks. IBC damage often occurs when the bottle is left in the sun, as UV damage weakens the plastic bottle. Additionally, unwashed bottles can become weaker if the liquids inside are even mildly corrosive. By washing your tanks when they’re empty and leaving them in shaded areas as much as possible, you can expect the lifespan of your unit to increase.
