What is a Vibration Test on IBC Tanks?

A vibration test for IBC tanks checks to ensure the contents inside the tank are secure when being shipped. This test emits shocks and vibrations to the IBC tank. The results are recorded and if issues are discovered during a vibration test, the tanks will need to be fixed.

Requirements for Vibration Tests

Vibration tests are required for United Nations Recommendations—a worldwide regulation for transporting goods. The tanks must undergo one of two vibration tests: random vibration testing or sine vibration testing. These tests will determine if the IBC tanks are strong enough to do heavy-duty tasks. If it is found that they are not able to withstand the tests, they will need to be fixed. If the tanks still are unable to pass the examination they will be discarded.

Industries Required to Use Vibration Testing

There are a few industries that are required to use vibration testing for all of their IBC tanks. These include aviation, automotive, and defense. All of these industries must implement vibration testing because they use IBC tanks often to transport and store goods, some of which are hazardous and delicate. This allows them to safely and legally move and store goods around the world.

Vibration Testing Facilities

Vibration testing can be done at special facilities that contain appliances that can properly test the limits and durability of IBC tanks. These facilities can mimic the robustness that the containers will undergo in various industries. This includes shocks, rattles, bumps, and environmental simulations.
