What is the Capacity of an IBC Tank?
The capacity of an Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tank varies based on the size of the container. Container capacity ranges from around 400 litres to 3000 litres depending on the purpose, materials, and dimensions of the tote. One of the most common models with a plastic liner and steel cage has a capacity of 1000 litres.
What Does Intermediate Mean?
The main descriptor of the IBC, the term intermediate refers to the size and capacity of the container. While all rigid IBCs are equipped with a bottle, cap, spout or valve, and a metal cage, the capacity of the tank varies. To be intermediate, an IBC must be larger than a standard drum (400 litres) and smaller than an intermodal tank container (3000 litres).
Most Popular Capacities and Their Dimensions
IBC totes can be found in a number of capacities, but some models are more popular for their size.
<1136 litre IBC tank - 106.7 cm x 121.9 cm x 109.2 cm
1325 litre IBC tank – 106.7 cm x 121.9 cm x 119.4 cm
2082 litre IBC tank – 106,7 cm x 121,9 cm x 180,3 cm
Why Sizes and Capacities Vary
The size of the container depends on the role that it will fill. If a tank will be used for storage, it will likely be taller and larger, as there is no need to pack them into a shipping container efficiently. If the tank is used for shipping, it is likely to be smaller and shorter in order to allow for double stacking in the shipping container.
