How Much Does an IBC Tank Weigh?
The size and weight of an Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tote range greatly. To be considered an intermediate container, the tank must have a capacity between 400 litres (standard shipping drum capacity) and 3000 litres (intermodal tank container capacity). The weight of a filled container varies depending on the product or material inside.
Materials of an IBC Tank
Most rigid IBCs are made of a plastic bottle, metal cage, a cap on top for product filling and a spout or valve near the bottom for product emptying. Some IBCs opt for stainless or carbon steel, while others use high-density plastic. A Flexible IBC (FIBC) is made of a light-weight woven plastic.
Weight of an IBC Tank
IBCs are made from a variety of materials. One of the more standard models, the 1000 litres plastic bottle and steel cage, weighs around 65 kg when empty and up to 1150 kg when fully loaded. An FIBC designed to carry up to 1100 kg of solid material weighs only a few kg itself. The material of the container determines its empty weight.
Weight of Materials in the Tank
Each IBC is sized to carry about 1100 kg of product, but the product itself may affect the overall weight. A 1000 litres plastic bottle IBC full of water weighs over 1150 kg, while the FIBC is often used to carry lighter materials and solids and generally weighs less than its solid cousin.
